The SLBMC Medical Internship is a structured transitional year designed to prepare medical graduates for full registration and independent practice. Interns rotate through core disciplines to gain broad clinical exposure.
Begin your clinical career at Antigua’s national hospital. Our one-year internship programme provides hands-on training across core medical specialties under the direct supervision of experienced consultants.

The Internship Programme is a rigorous one-year training experience designed to give you a solid foundation in clinical medicine. It is structured to prepare you for full licensure and independent general practice. Without the successful completion of the Internship Programme, you cannot be fully registered as a doctor or medical practitioner in Antigua and Barbuda.

Our Consultant Faculty is dedicated to house staff training, and the programme’s structured approach ensures you graduate with the competencies required for independent practice.

Including your comprehensive academic and professional history.
Not older than 3 months - sent directly from each referee or signed copy with referee’s telephone number.
Including your medical degree/diploma - copies must bear the notation “originals seen” - include official translation of any documents not in English.
Sent directly from your medical school or duly notarised.
Clear copy of the photo/biographical data page of your current, valid passport.
Recent photograph - taken within the last six months.
Current immunisation / vaccination record.
Not older than 3 months - original preferred.
Accepted equivalents: USMLE Steps 1 & 2, or PLAB 1 & 2 - if held; applicants with a board certifying exam will have an advantage.

Your original transcripts must be sent directly from your medical school to SLBMC - by email or by mail - unless the transcripts are duly notarised.
Three (3) reference letters are required. Letters should be sent directly from the referee to SLBMC, addressed to the Medical Director. A signed copy including the referee’s telephone number may be accepted from the applicant. Unsigned letters will not be accepted under any circumstances.
All documents must be in English. If any original document is not in English, submit both the original and a certified English translation. Certified or notarised copies of diplomas, certificates, or transcripts must clearly bear the notation “originals seen.”
Submit all documents together as a complete package by email to clinical.privileges@msjmc.org, or by mail/courier or hand delivery to the Information Desk at the hospital. Please include your full name and “Internship Application” in the subject line of your email.

This is the main application form required for every applicant to the internship programme. It includes sections for your personal details, professional licences, education and training history, employment record, referees, and professional disclosures. A document checklist is printed on the first page of the form.

Download your completed form as a PDF using the “Download PDF” button at the bottom of the form. Follow the on-screen tip there to remove the browser’s URL and date strip from your saved PDF.
Sign the form - either electronically before saving, or by printing the PDF and signing in black ink.
Submit the signed form together with all supporting documents listed in the Requirements section.
Completed forms and all supporting documents should be submitted together as a complete package. You may email your package to clinical.privileges@msjmc.org, deliver it in person to the Information Desk at the hospital, or mail it to the Office of the Medical Director. Applications for the July intake must be submitted no later than April 30th of each year. Early submission is highly encouraged.
Yes. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview (either in-person or via video conference) with the Internship Committee.
Yes, non-nationals may apply. However, priority is given to nationals and graduates of UWI, as per regional agreements.
Standard rotations include Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Paediatrics.
SLBMC provides on-call rooms within the hospital for duty nights. Long-term staff housing availability varies and should be discussed during the interview.
You must be *eligible* for provisional registration. The actual registration process usually happens simultaneously with the internship offer.
